Improve Indoor Air Quality. Reduce Seasonal Allergies.

Air quality allergiesMany people with allergies confine themselves to their homes during allergy season since outdoor air can contain pollen and spores. But dust mites, animal dander and even pollen can cause problems indoors. Follow these tips to improve air quality in your home and reduce allergy symptoms:

Invest in a doormat- People can track in all sorts of dirt, pollen and other pollutants on their shoes. Doormats can help prevent these potential allergens from spreading through the house.

Control dust mites – One of the biggest steps you can take to keep these pests away is encasing your mattress in an allergy-proof cover. Also, wash your bedding, pillows and stuffed toys in water at 130 degrees Fahrenheit regularly. Weekly is best.

Clean exposed surfaces- And keep clutter to a minimum.

Keep intake vents clear – Furniture and other household items can restrict airflow around intake vents.  By keeping these areas clear, your air HVAC system can circulate air in your house to maximize air filtration.

Vacuum once or twice weekly- Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter or special double filter bags to reduce dust from being spread into the air. If you have allergies, wear a dust mask during housework, and use a damp or treated cloth for dusting.

Keep windows and doors closed- Though tempting, opening doors and windows can invites in pollen and air quality-compromising pollutants. Be particularly aware on dry, breezy days as they are conducive to transmitting allergens.

Be mindful of animal dander- To test the effect your pet has on your allergies, go on a vacation away from your animal and monitor your symptoms.

Use a High Efficiency Air Filter- High efficiency filters can be more expensive, but they trap allergens, neutralize odors, and inhibit bacteria growth. You should replace your filter every 30-90 days. If your family has severe allergies or if you have an excess amount of dust in the air, you may consider replacing the filter more frequently.
